With a $65M-plus domestic opening for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is it really a surprise that this morning Paramount announced that a sequel is underway with Michael Bay at the helm once again. Bay is set to produce the sequel alongside his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick. Screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol) are again coming aboard to write the sequel and will also receive an exec producing credit. The surprise box office hit in 17 markets internationally this weekend to take in an estimated $28.7M final numbers will be out tomorrow (I check box office mojo normally). So its worldwide total is around $97.3M, depending on today’s numbers of course. It’s been a Michael Bay summer for Paramount with the earlier Transformers success and now the recent Ninja Turtles hit. Much of its opening success was propelled not only by family audiences but also the 25 and and 35 year-olds who grew up watching the animated series on Saturday mornings. I’ve yet to see the movie so I’ll reserve judgement until is see it via Redbox or Netflix.
